Un pasado industrial
Por su proximidad a una vía de trenes abandonada, la larga historia de este terreno cuenta de usos industriales como un montacargas para carbón, un depósito de aceite y, con el tiempo, la imprenta Harmon & Castella. Frank Castella vendió la compañía en 2018, tras lo cual el edificio permaneció vacío hasta 2020, cuando Northside Junction, LLC — filial de The Scenic Hudson Land Trust — lo adquirió a fin de crear un espacio para proyectos dirigidos por la comunidad.

Ubicada en la intersección del Dutchess Rail Trail, Northside Line, Walkway Over the Hudson, Arroyo Fall Kill y la futura sede de oficinas de Scenic Hudson, La Unión albergará una serie de eventos emergentes inspirados por la comunidad local a fin de mejorar a largo plazo la estabilidad, la economía y el bienestar del vecindario Northside de Poughkeepsie.
En otoño del 2023, hubo una serie de mercados temporales de comida y comerciantes, llamado The Eatway y dirigido por StartUp PK, una nueva entidad sin fines de lucro creada por residentes locales destinada a apoyar emprendedores locales de Poughkeepsie. En los mercados se presentaron negocios locales en un ambiente acogedor al aire libre para disfrutar comida, arte, entretenimiento y más.

THE EATWAY: Starting May 4, 2024, The Eatway is coming back to the Junction to host a weekend food truck and vendor market serving both neighborhood residents and visitors to the adjacent Pasarela sobre el Hudson. The markets are run by StartUp PK, a local non profit business incubator with the mission to create a more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous city culture through the provision of entrepreneurial support systems and intentional community capacity building. The Eatway will feature locally run businesses, and will host a series of community events to create a dynamic and inclusive space at La Unión. Visit their website for the Eatway schedule.
SEASONS & SUPERHEROES: Starting in July 2024, The Growing STEMZ Foundation will be holding their Seasons and Superheroes environmental education program, enhancing STEM understanding and promoting youth leadership in earth and climate science, gardening, and community action projects. The Junction will be an outdoor classroom for experiments and data collection using sundials and temporary garden beds. Lessons will also take place at Parque Malcolm X where students will learn about the FallKill through water based activities. The Eatway will provide an opportunity for the students to present their projects and host science activities at La Unión, and will use their gardening lessons as opportunities to beautify the space around the market.
